We have advice from Edinburgh that a very ingenious
mechanick at Gilmerton about two miles from that city,
having for these five years past employ'd his hours of
avocation in hewing a dwelling in a rock under ground, has
now finish'd six fire-rooms, with beds, tables, and seats of
stone, and a well, whose water is judged medicinal, and fit
for bathing in. A curiosity so singular and surprizing,
draws a great many people to see it. He is adorning the
entry with a large square stone, finely cut, upon which is
engraven the following inscription:
THE CYCLOPS CAVE.
Upon the Earth thrive villany and wo;
But happiness and I are lodg'd below.
My hands hew'd out this rock into a cell;
Where free from din of life I safe y dwell:
On Jacob's pillow nightly lay my head,
My house when living, and my grave when dead.
Inscribe upon it, when it turns my tomb,
I liv'd and dy'd within my mother's womb.
