London . . . On Thursday night at the theatre in Drury-Lane,
a gentlewoman who sat in the pit to see the play, fancying
she saw smoak issued from under the stage, and thinking she
smelled fire, happening to declare her thoughts aloud, and
endeavouring to get out of the house, gave such an alarm, as
threw the numerous audience into confusion for about the
space of half an hour in which time much mischief was done,
and one woman big with child was press'd to death; but upon
a strict search, no sign of fire appearing, the terror was
stopp'd at length and the rest of the play, (King Henry
VIII) was acted on without interruption.
