Canterbery, Apr 27. We hear from Lydd, that last
Wednesday a French privateer, . . . [7 lines, took an oyster
smack, and would have taken more vessels in the bay] had it
not been for a party of Brigadier Blakeny's Regiment of
foot. Captain William Haviland's company, then at Lydd, and
persons belonging to the said town who, upon information
given, beat to arms, and within an hour after, the soldiers
and volunteer townsmen, in full spirits, march'd to sea-
side, and were put on board three tenders, and chais'd the
said privateer fir[ ] hours, . . .
