Ware [England], July 19. A few days ago, as some gentlemen
were surveying the new river near that place, news was
brought to them that the wife of Thomas Sutton, one of their
workmen, whose dwelling is on the bank of the stream, was at
that instant safely delivered of a boy; Mr. Mills, a Welch
gentleman, who is a bachelor near 100 years of age, being
present, insisted that the child should be christened on the
river, at his expence, in honour of Sir Hugh Middleton, the
founder: and accordingly the ceremony was performed on
Monday last, in a boat, on that fine pool, called Chadwell
Spring. Two Welch gentlemen and ladies answered for the
child, who was named Meddleton Mills Chadwell. There was a
fine band of music, and upwards of two thousand spectators
on this occasion, to whom plenty of liquor was given. We
hear Mr. Mills gave a handsome sum of money to the parents,
which is to continue yearly to bring up the child, and that
he intends a provision for it.
