. . . [22-line introduction, signed] T.G.
. . . [essay on modern opinions on politeness and good
breeding, couched in descriptions of individuals:]
Abaxux, who imagines he has arrived at the utmost pitch
of good breeding, places it entirely in a graceful motion,
and in an exquisite dissernment in the important article of
dress. To obtain these has been his only pursuit since he
left his nurse . . . [6 lines, he has been under the care
of] his taylor, barber and dancing master. Indeed he was
once attended upon by a teacher of music; but the trouble
and fatigue of mind which he underwent, was so great that it
threw him into a dangerous sickness, from which it was
thought he would never have recover d; and perhaps he never
would, had not his valet de chambre luckily heard of a
dance, soon to be made in a neighbouring town, . . . [19
lines, he got well, indulged in his pleasures.] When his
hours of study, which he looks upon as the most advantageous
and profitable part of his life, are over, he appears at the
play house, or at any other assembly, where he may have an
opportunity of shewing his accomplishments, either of
dancing or dress. . .
