Extract of a letter from Charlestown, South-Carolina, dated
May 26, 1770.
On Friday morning last . . . was landed . . . the statue
of the Right Hon. the Earl of Chatham; on which occasion a
great number of the principal inhabitants attended at Col.
Beale's wharf, ready to draw the statue by hand. At half
past eight, the ropes being properly fixed, and an ensign
displayed on the carriage, the inhabitants present, to the
number of some hundreds, (at the beat of drum) began to draw
the statue from the wharf, along the Bay up Broad Street, to
the Watch house yard, where it will remain till the Pedestal
is erected for it to stand upon, which we hear will be
completed by the King's birth day. . .
