From the Political State for May, 1737. . . The 28th
instant at noon the Society of Free Masons went with
uncommon splendor from the house of their grand master the
Earl of Darnley, in Pall Mall, to Fishmongers-Hall; his
lordship appeared on this occasion in a superb chariot drawn
by six fine grey horses, kettle drums, French horns,
trumpets, were properly disposed in the procession which
consisted of above a hundred coaches and chariots, all
filled with persons of eminence, and the breakfast of his
lordship's house cost upwards of two hundred pounds, all
which are undeniable marks of the wealth and wisdom of the
present age !
