From the London Magazine for May, 1741. . .
London, May 18. This day, when the action at Carthagena was
known as a certainty, there were all the publick
demonstrations of joy; the guns at the tower and from the
shipping in the river were fir'd; the bells through the
cities of London and Westminster, and the suburbs, were
rung, and at night were bonfires and illuminations. And
these rejoicings were continued on the next day, and spread
themselves thro' Great Britain and Ireland, as soon as the
most agreeable news was receiv'd.
