Extract of a letter from the Hague. What we here expected
would happen is actually come to pass: The French claim the
victory at the battle near Dettingen; they pretend that they
remain'd masters of the field, and as a proof of this they
relate the taking Aschaffenbourg, the head-quarters of the
allies, which they omit to tell, had been voluntarily
quitted the day before the action; they likewise say, that
the King has wrote a letter to the Archbishop, to cause Te
Deum to be sung: Nothing however, of certainty is to be
gather'd from the act of praise, because the French nation
have ever been so humble and resign'd as to thank God for
being defeated, oftener than for being victorious.
