[London] Aug. 14. Serjeant Hartley of the 2d Regiment, and
John South, a drummer of the 1st Regiment of foot guards,
were conducted, under a detachment of the 3 regiment of foot
guards, to Hyde Park, where they were both shot for
deserting to the French, &c. Two clergy-men attended them,
and they apprear'd very penitent: South fell dead and the
first fire, but Hartley fell on his back, crying, Lord have
mercy on my soul ! whereupon another file in reserve fir'd,
and dispatch'd him.
