[England] March 27. . . On Saturday the magistrates of the
city of Durham went in procession with the recruiting
officers and volunteers drum; and having ordered several
barrels of ale to be given to the market folks at the cross,
address'd the populace in a polite manner on the necessity
of augmenting his Majesty's forces at the present critical
juncture, and on the advantageous terms offered to
volunteers, &c. particularly to such as would inlist with
them, as they had provided a fund to support their children
and widows; in consequence of which several stout fellows
inlisted at the drum head immediately.
