New-York, Decemb. 8. The following Thanksgiving anthem, was
on Sunday last performed to great satisfaction, in Trinity
Church, before his Excellency General Amherst, on his return
to New York, from the conquest of Canada.----Compil'd and
set to music by Mr. Tuckey.
Solo.
Comfort ye my people, saith our God; speak ye comfortably to
Jerusalem, and cry unto her that her warfare is
accomplished, that her iniquity is pardon'd for she hath
receiv'd of the Lord's hand double for all her sins.
Solo and Chorus.
Praise ye the Lord for the avenging of Israel.
Solo.
I will sing praise to the Lord God of Israel.
O God when thou wentest forth before the people, when thou
wentest thro' the wilderness the earth shook.
Thou didst march through the land in indignation, thou didst
thresh the Heathen in thine anger.
Thou wentest forth for the salvation of thy people, ev'n for
the salvation of thine anointed.
My heart is towards the governors of Israel, who offer'd
themselves willingly among the people. Bless ye the Lord.
Chorus.
Bless ye the Lord.
Ev'n the God who helpeth us, and poureth his benefits upon
us.
Solo.
Through thee O Lord I have discomfited an host of men, and
by the help of my God I have leap'd over the wall.
Because thou hast been my helper, therefore under the shadow
of thy wings will I rejoice.
O that men would therefore praise the Lord for his goodness,
and declare the wonders that he doth for the children of
men; that they would offer unto him the sacrifice of
thanksgiving, and tell out his works with gladness.
Solo and Chorus.
O give thanks unto the God of Heaven; for his mercy endureth
forever: Who remembered us when we were in trouble, and
hath delivered us from our enemies; for his mercy endureth
forever. Amen.
