Paris, Apr 8. On the 12th ult, a fire broke out at
Essoyes, in Campagne, which in less than five hours burnt
down two hundred & seventy houses, and furniture, goods,
provisions, stores, near 24,000 hogsheads of brandy and
wine, two large droves of horned cattle, all are consumed;
the church and the steeple are entirely destroyed, and the
bells melted. In the whole village only 31 houses are left
standing. Four persons perished in the flames, and four
others are dead with the fright. The number of persons, who
are reduced to the utmost extremity by this accident,
amounts to 1200.
