London,. . . June 9. . . Lady Northumberland being under a
necessity of leaving town on Monday, on account of the death
of Mrs. Smithson, her mother in-law, the grand
illuminations, designed as a complement to his Majesty's
birth-day, were postponed till her ladyship's return, which
was on Tuesday evening; when every thing was conducted with
a decorum and magnificence peculiar to the Countess of
Northumberland: 1500 persons of distinction were invited,
and the garden was decorated with 10,000 lamps, 400 of which
being fixed to the ballustrades, descending by the steps,
had a most beautiful effect. Two bands of music were
provided, one in the house, (where the great gallery was
illuminated to an astonishing degree of splendor ) and the
other in the garden, which answered alternately, and upon
Lord Granby's entrance struck up, See the conq'ring Hero
comes; a mark of respect to the extraordinary merit of that
illustrious officer, which was instantly returned by a
general huzza from the whole company. The company parted at
half an hour after twelve, and at seven o'clock yesterday
morning her Ladyship set out for Sion-House.
