[In an essay answering a letter which replied to the

squabble? Why a part of it was this: Two years before our
fathers first came to Plymouth, viz. May 24, 1618, Lord's-
day, King James issues his declaration, wherein he requires
the bishop of Lancashire, to present all Puritans and
Precisans with the same; either constraining them to
conform, or to leave the country; that those who attend on
church on Sundays, be not disturbed or discouraged from
dancing, archery, leaping, vaulting, having may-games,
whitson-ales, morrice dances, setting up may poles, and
other sports therewith used, or any other such harmless
recreation, on Sundays after divine service. . . "
