TO MR. SINCERITY, THE LADIES BEST FRIEND.
When time was young (the learned say)
That virtue bore unrivall'd sway.
Good manners, modesty and sense,
Were in repute, of consequence,
. . . [30 lines]
With satin vests and silken hose,
A beaver white and velvet shoes;
A gaudy coat, and ruffles lac'd,
A foreign cane, with knot in taste;
With toupee high, and powder'd head,
Evince all manly tho't is fled---
For puppets drest with utmost pains,
Are puppets still, devoid of brains.---
. . . [12 more lines, signed] Rosalinda.
