A View of London, in a Letter to the Rev. Mr.-- -----, A. H
of --- College, Oxon. Sir,. . .
There are several theatres, where people of all ranks
assemble. Last night plays were exhibited at five, viz.
Drury-Lane, Lincoln's Inn-Fields, Covent-Garden, Goodman's-
Fields, and the Haymarket, tho' no opera was perform'd; from
whence you may judge of the prosperity and riches, as of the
decline and poverty of this great metropolis. These
theatres labour to rival one another: When [?Cato] or any
noble [ ]appears on the stage, the audience is thin;
laughing is in fashion, therefore the people would lose
their diversion; but Monsieur Harliquin is a great
favourite.
