New York, October 13: On Thursday last his excellency our
Governor was invited by most of the principal merchants and
other gentlemen of this city, to a very splendid
entertainment provided for him at Mr. Todd's in order to
congratulate his excellency upon his safe return from
Albany, where he had been to renew the Treaty of Peace and
Friendship with the six nations of Indians, as mentioned in
our last.
After dinner his Majesty's, the Queen's and the Prince of
Wale's, and the rest of the Royal Family, together with his
Excellency's health, and prosperity to his administration in
this province, with success to George Augustus's Royal
Battery and several other loyal healths were drank (the
musick playing all the time) and his excellency was also
pleased to drink prosperity to trade, and at the same time
in a very obliging manner, assured the gentlemen there, that
if they could think of any methods to promote and encourage
the trade and welfare of this province, he would heartily
contribute every thing in his power thereto. In the evening
the house was illuminated in a handsome manner:
The whole was conducted and concluded with the greatest
demonstrations of joy, and satisfaction that ever was seen
in this city.
On Saturday last, being the anniversary of his Majesty's
coronation, the same was observed with the usual solemnitys
when the gentlemen and merchants of this city waited upon
his Excellency at the Fort, where their Majesty's and the
rest of the Royal healths were drank. . . [2 lines] And a
night his Excellency and family, with several other
gentlemen and ladies were entertained at Mr. Freeman's house
in this city, which was handsomely illuminated. The whole
was concluded with dancing, and all the demonstrations of
joy, suitable to the day.
