Edinburgh, April 19. We hear from Elgen, that upon the 4th
current, died the master of the musick school of that place,
the greatest vocal musician of his time, who wanted nothing
but ambition to render him as conspicuous for his skill in
Scots musick, as the famous Farinelli is for the Italian.
It will be allowed by all who knew him, that if he did not
excell in theory, his practice gave it the last touch. His
death is to be so much the more regretted, by how much vocal
musick (his particular talent) exceeds instrumental, or
church musick deserves the place of any other kind of
harmony. In a word, his only description is, that he is not
to be described. But if words are significant of their
meaning, we may say negatively, that the improperest person
[in] Britain was called (Alexander) Rust.
