Triste, Feb. 16. Count Altheim is just now pass'd thro'
this city in his way to Vienna, whether he is sent by Count
Traun, to carry the agreeable news of the victory he has
lately gain'd over the Spainards, of which the following
circumstantial relation is come to our hands.
"The Count de Gages, General of the Spanish troops, having
form'd a design of surprizing the Austrian forces, posted
behind the Panaro, drew together, with as little noise as
might be, all his forces into the neighbourhood of Bologna;
and that the Austrians might have not intelligence of his
design, he order'd the gates of the city to be shut for
three days together, under pretence of a great robbery, and
made a mighty bustle in searching houses to discover the
thieves. The third day he gave a grand entertainment, at
which all the nobility were present, and after it was over
there was a ball. [all a ruse so that the military could
sneak away; Spanish fell to Austrians at Campo Santo; last 4
lines of last para:] they [Austrians] stood the whole brunt
of the Spanish army, and never any troops in the world
behav'd better. Count Traun caus'd Te Deum to be sung under
the discharge of his artillery in the field of battle.
