Extract of a letter from a gentleman in London, belonging to
New-England, to his friend in Boston. London, Dec. 28.
1743.
On Saturday last I saw Mr. Whitefield at his house. . .
[19 lines] before he embarks for America. . . [8 lines] a
Letter Meeting; which is indeed nothing less but a great
congregation of about four thousand souls who meet, have
accounts by letters from all parts of the three Kingdoms &
America; who intercede for, mourn with, and rejoyce,
according to the state of Christ's Kingdom in general, or
the particular circumstances of societies, private
Christians, & especially ministers. Their hymns are
compos'd on purpose, and frequently extempore at the end of
a letter, by one Mr. Cinnick; and both prayers, hymns &c.
take up about four hours; which time the assembly seem
satisfied to stay, to mourn with him that mourns, to rejoyce
with him that rejoyce. . . [1 col. more]
