London. . . Aug. 14. This morning between seven and eight
o'clock, Serjeant Hartly, of the second Regiment, and John
South, a drummer of the First Regiment of Foot-Guards, were
conducted under a detachment from every company of the 3
Regiments of Foot-Guards to Hyde-Park, where they were both
shot for deserting to the French, &c. Two clergymen
attended them, and they appeared very penitent. South
fell'dead at the first fire, but Serjeant Hartly fell on his
back and said, Lord have mercy on my soul; whereupon another
file of musketeers fired, and dispatch'd him.
