I have lately read with pleasure a speech delivered in the
House of Lords, many years ago; it was occasioned by a
bill's being bro't into Parliament, for refraining the
Licentiousness of the stage: It seems that in that day, the
most innocent representations upon the stage, were looked
upon by some men in power, and their tools, as designed to
set them and their conduct, in a ridiculous light, and
therefore licentious; for this reason they were for laying,
both the stage and the press, under all possible restraints.
This noble lord undertook to vindicate the freedom of the
press as well as the stage--"[rest of 4/5ths para. re. press
freedom].
