New-York, January 16. About eleven o'clock last night the
inhabitants of this city were suddenly and greatly alarmed
by the cry of fire, the striking out of the fire bell, and
all the other bells in the city; but it was soon after found
that a body of men [as is said Royal Americans] had entered
the New-Goal, and demanded the keys of Mr. Mills the Keeper,
who refusing to deliver them, received several wounds with a
bayonet. They afterwards forced the doors, and let loose
all or most of the prisoners.----It seems their principal
intent was to release Major Rogers, who a few days ago came
to town, was arrested, and confined in that place, which
they effected.----Part of our militia were collected
together as soon as possible by beat of drum; remained under
arms all night and have taken six of the persons. The
particulars of this atrocious affair could not be obtained
at the publication of this paper.----One hundred and fifty
of the first battalion of Royal Americans came to town since
our last.
