26 May 1766:13 (582 Supplement)
Boston, May 23, 1766. Since the gentlemen of Cambridge
decline favouring the publick with the particulars of their
rejoicings; as I was there the two days they had them, I
will venture to give an account of what I then heard and saw
relative to the Sons of Liberty, upon the news of so
glorious an event as the repeal of the Stamp-Act,. . . [5
lines:] Accordingly last Tuesday in the afternoon there was
a great assembly in the meeting house, unto whom he [the
Rev. Mr. Appleton] preached a most excellent sermon, now in
the press, at the desire of almost all that heard it, and at
the expence of General Brattle, from the two last verses of
the 30th Psalm. The solemnity began with prayer, and was
concluded by the young gentlemen of the college singing two
anthems extreamly well suited to the joyful occasion. . .
[17 lines] There was a grand, well constructed bonfire upon
the Common, bells ringing, skyrockets and other fireworks
playing, till it was time to retire, which was done with
great order and deacency and in good season. . . [rest of
col. save 10 lines]
