We hear from Newport, Rhode-Island, that about 10 o'clock
last Wednesday night as Capt. Malbone in a large brig
belonging to that place, was coming in deep laden with a
valuable cargo from Jamaica, and within about a league of
the light house there, a Negro fellow on board went betwixt
decks with intent to steal a bucket of rum out of one of the
hogsheads, and having a candle with him, it unhappily
catched on fire whilst he was drawing & soon set the vessel
in flames, by which melancholy accident three women & two
children, who were in the cabin, perished, the rest of the
people on board with great difficulty saved themselves in
the boat.--One of the women that perished is said to be
young Mrs. Hallam, an actress, who with other commedians
were returning from Jamaica.--The loss of the vessel & cargo
we hear amounts to 6000 sterl. & the valuable effects
belonging to the passengers 1000 more.
