Edinburgh, January 7. There were accounts laid before the
general meeting [of the Society in Scotland for propagating
Christian Knowledge] of the numbers of scholars at these
schools, and of their proficiency, and by the rules of the
Society these lists and accounts are not taken on the school
masters word,. . . [7 lines] The Society furnishes books to
all such of their scholars as are not able to buy,. . .
musick books,. . . [7 lines] There was lately a report from
one of the Society's schools, that several of the scholars
had not only come to the length of reading distinctly,
singing the common tunes, writing, but had made advance in
arithmatick.
