Cambridge, June 25. Mr. James Paul, having been for some
time, a minister of the Gospel, to a Presbyterian Church and
Burmudas, (where being forced in by a storm, the people
joyfully received him, and entertained him) after he had
been educated and licentiated at Glasgow; and the Church
desiring, that the ministers of this neighbourhood would
fortify him for the exercise of his ministry by finishing
his ordination, with the imposition of the hands of the
Presbytery here: the thing was this day performed with much
solemnity, and with all due publick circumstances in the
College Hall.
The Reverend Dr. Mather first opened the meeting, with a
speech declaring the occasion; Mr. Prince made a prayer; Mr.
Colman preached the sermon: then (upon the doctor's calling
for it,) Mr. Paul exhibited a confession of his faith, and
then a declaration of his dispositions and resolutions where
with he undertook the ministry of the gospel; and his vows
of all pastoral fidelity to the flock at Burmudas: hereupon
the Doctor accompanied by the Reverend Mr. Hancock, Mr.
Colman, Mr. Prince, Mr. Appleton and Mr. Cooper, with hands
imposed on him, gave him his charge; and made the prayers
the occasion called for: The Doctor then having first made a
speech to the ordained minister, which referred to his
obligations and encouragements, concluded with a pungent
speech onto the scholars, who made a considerable part of
the auditory, setting before them the awful nature of the
ministry, whereof they mostly are the candidates, and
pressing them to do, and think such things as may qualify
them for it: A psalm was then sung, and all was finished
with a blessing.
