Corfu, (upon the Gulf of Venice,) Aug. 22, 1724. We have
had here great rejoycings for three days successively, on
account of the exaltation of Cardinal Orsini to the
Pontificate. The Te Deum was sung last Sunday in the
Cathedral Church to a concert of most agreeable musick,
under the discharge of the cannon of the cittadel, and of
all the ships in our road, with the ringing of the bells,
&c. and the evening concluded with great entertainments, and
fireworks, every house in the city being fully illuminated.
Upon this occasion it was remarkable that at the perswasion
of M Quitini, our Roman Catholick Archbishop, the proto-
papa, or vicar-general of the Greeks, who are very numerous
in the island, order'd also to illuminate the tower, and to
ring the bells of the Greek church of St. Spiridon,
notwithstanding this body of people are quite against all
the rules of the Romish religion, the said proto-papa
depending only on the Musti, or archbishop of
Constantinople.
