From the Daily Post Boy, Octob. 8. Lille, Octo.7. N.S.
The publick rejoycings made here, on occasion of the
dauphin's birth, drew a great concourse of foreigners to
this city. They commenced the 29th ult by singing the Te
Deum in our collegiate church of St. Peter, at which the
Duke de Boufflers, Governor General of the Province, was
present. During this solemnity, 100 pieces of cannon fired
3 rounds, which were answer'd by several volleys of the
garrisons both of the town and citadel. In the evening we
had fine fireworks, and a magnificent supper in the town
house. On the 8th instant, the Duke de Boufflers gave the
people a comedy gratis. The next day he invited all the
persons of distinction in the province and upon the
frontiers and [also] the officers of the garrison, to a
supper of above 300 dishes of meat. They were entertained
before supper with a fine concert of musick, and after it
with a masquerade. The front of his house, his court yards,
and gardens were illuminated as was also the street, in
which several tables were spread, and furnish'd with all
sorts of meat for the people. Several fountains of wine
were kept running all night, and the concourse of people was
so great, that there could not be less than 6000 persons fed
at those tables, exclusively of the soldiers of the town &
citadel who made upwards of 5000 more, to every one of whom
the Duke de Boufflers gave plenty of bread, meat and wine.
