18-25 May 1732:21 (1478)
We have an account from South Kingston in Narraganset that
of Wednesday the 17th currant, Mr. Joseph Torrey was
solemnly & publickly ordained to the work of the gospel
ministry there. The Rev. Mr. Cotton of Providence began
with prayer, the Rev. Mr. Webb of Boston preach'd from Luke
ii.10; the Rev. Mr. Searing of Newport pray'd after sermon;
the Rev. Mr. Nyles of Braintry, who had formerly preach'd
the gospel & posses'd the ministry lands there, and left 'em
with a tenant about 18 years ago, had now the satisfaction
of ordaining and giving the charge to his successor; the
Rev. Mr. Prince of Boston gave the right hand of fellowship;
the 3d part of the 68th psalm being sung, the Rev. Mr.
Torrey concluded with the blessing. It must be said in the
commendation both of the Baptists and Quakers that they
treated both the messengers and elders of the churches with
great civility where-ever they met them: and both those
denominations as well as others present, behav'd themselves
with exemplary decency and attention thro' the whole
exercise; the chief Judge of the county court, tho' of one
of those denominations, very generously and readily
consented that the county house might be used upon that
occasion, the meeting house hard by not being sufficient to
accommodate the auditory. Let us emulate them in those
engaging virtues that have so great a tendency to promote
the universal peace and happiness of those communities where
they prevail and reign.
