Cologne, March 1. [Re. Mt. Vesuvius and the Pompeii find; 2d
para.] We persuaded ourselves at first, that there was only
a theatre in the place, that had been dug into; viz. that
theatre which according to historians, was buried by an
earthquake in the reign of the emperor Titus. But for
sometime past the ruins of other edifices have been found,
which prove the discovery not to consist of a theatre only,
but of an entire city, . . .
We have in the architrave of the theatre the name both of
him that caused it to be built, and of the architect who
built it: For the following words appear in large capitals,
theatrum orchestrani de suo----L. Rufus, L. Filius; and a
little after in smaller letters, Urnilius P.J Architect.
But the master piece of all these antiquities is an
equestrian statue . . . .
