Extract of a letter from Lisbon, Sept. 7.
"When Gen. Burgoyne surprized the Spanish frontier town of
Valencia de Alcantara, on the night of the 27th ult. he
found therein the whole regiment of Valencia, and 7
companies of grenadiers, who were all put to the sword
because they got into the houses, and fired after the
surrender, except . . . There was taken in this city, as
military store, 20 mortars, 37 pieces of cannon . . . 10
pair of colours, 4 pair of kettle drums, and 30 common
drums.
