London, October 24. Benjamin Robert Turbott, who, through
the humane intercession of Mr. Garrick, has his sentence
changed from death to transportation was at Drury-lane house
on Monday evening to thank his generous benefactor, having
previously given bail to quit the Kingdom as soon as
possible.
By Mr. Garrick's recommendation, we are moreover told,
that one of the American Governors has promised to take him
under his protection on his arrival in America.
. . . [paragraph on his imprisonment]
He is about 23 years of age, son to a late celebrated
comedian of that name: his improper education, joined to the
most aggravated distress, that of wanting necessaries to
supply with sustenance a wife in labour, together with three
infants, which occasion the crime; which was stealing a
silver cup from the Sun alehouse in Wine-street, Covent-
Garden.
