A genuine letter from Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, to a
gentleman in London, dated March 30th, 1768.
This day about noon we received the news of Mr. Wilkes's
election for the county of Middlesex, by a great majority.
The inexpressible joy that appeared among the inhabitants in
general is not to be conceived; the bells were immediately
set a ringing, and continued upwards of twelve hours, and
every inhabitant of the town, appeared with a blue cockade
in his hat, . . .
The celebrated Tristram Shandy was buried privately in a
new burying ground belonging to the parish of St. George's,
Hanover Square, at twelve o'clock at noon, attended only by
two gentlemen in a mourning coach, and no bell tolling.
