A letter from London mentions, " That the celebrated
historian, Mrs. Maccaulay, (with a select party of her
friends) was entertained on board the ship Dutchess of
Gordon, Capt. Wynne, (belonging to N. York) the 7th of June;
on which occasion the ship was decorated with a great number
of flags and streamers, disposed in an elegant manner; . . .
[4 lines] As soon as the company embarked, the music in the
barge played Handel's Water-piece, till they came under the
ship's stern, when it ceased, and the band in the ship begun
with The Hero Comes, till Mrs. Macaulay was on board, and
then chang'd to Rule Brittannia; on her entering the cabin,
she was saluted by a discharge of cannon. Capt. Wynne had
designed a grand illumination on board his ship, in honour
of his illustrious visitor, which was omitted by her
particular request."
