London, May 6. . . The following particulars respecting the
cause of a late duel we are assured may be depended
upon:--The noble Lord has for some time been dissatisfied
with his lady's behaviour, but could not fix on an thing
particular to accuse her of, till the following accident,
which called forth his resentment. He asked his lady to
accompany him in a little excursion, but she excused herself
under pretence of an indisposition: He left her therefore,
as he thought, confined by it to her chamber: Accident more
than design brought him back, when, to his great
astonishment, he heard his lady was gone to the opera. He
followed, and found her in close conversation with the
wounded nobleman. This circumstance, with some dark stints
from the servant, occasioned the late rencounter, when the
count accused the lady of being the seducer. The lady has
retired from her husband to lodgings, and asserts her
innocence. Her father has declared, if she is innocent, he
will see that justice be done her; but if the contrary
should appear, he will assist the injured husband in making
her an example.
