26 Dec 1771:21,22,23,31 (3460)
London, September 28. 1771. According to the usual precepts
issued for that purpose a Common-hall was this day assembled
at the Guildhall of the City of London. About a quarter
after eleven Mr. Crosby, the present Lord-Mayor, passed
thro' the hall to the Council Chamber, without one single
huzza or the last applause from the people in the Guildhall
or out of it.
At a quarter after twelve the new sheriffs Messis. Wilkes
and Bull, (preceded by a band of music and the Rev. Doctor
Wilson, as master of the Joiner's Company, wearing a livery
gown over his cassock) came into Guildhall, and were met
there by Mr. Crosby, the Lord Mayor, and the aldermen who
were before assembled in the Council-Chamber; and by them
conducted into the Council-Chamber. . . [1 page]
