London. Dec. 10. Wednesday night, a little before the
opera began at Covent-Garden theatre, two Scotch officers in
the plaids, came into the pit, where they had not sat long
before the people in the gallaries began to call out, No
Scotch; No *****; Out-with them. They at last grew so
vehement, that some people began to be afraid of bad
consequences, but upon the curtain drawing up, the clamour
ceas'd.
The same night, when Lucinda (speaking of her father's
forcing her to marry against her will) says, by way of
illustrating her meaning, "That when Princes are oppressive
in their government, subjects have a right to assert their
liberties," there was a general shout and plaudit.
