Index Entry | Bells, in Bath, rung muffled for commoner's accepting peerage |
Location | Bath |
Citation | BPB.766.035 22 Sep 1766:31 (475) London. Aug. 5. Nothing can equal the surprize and consternation of the inhabitants of Bath, on finding the news confirm'd of the (late) great commoner's accepting a peerage. Many persons who had treasured up his speech relating to the American Stamp-Act, immediately consigned it to the flames; and we hear that at several places in the country the bells rang muffled on the occasion. |
