7-14 Mar 1774:32 (864)
The anniversary of the fifth of March was, on Saturday
se'nnight, commemorated by the true sons of liberty at
Newbury Port.---The day was ushered in by tolling the
bells,---from 7 to 10 o'clock the bells ceased, when they
began again and continued till 11, at which time a great
number of people of that and the neighbouring towns,
assembled at the Rev. Mr. Parson's meeting-house, where he
delivered a discourse well adapted to the times, from Gal.
v.1, Stand fast therefore in the liberty in which Christ has
made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of
bondage. The sermon was introduced by an anthem, and ended
by an elegy composed on the occasion. At evening the bells
were again tolled.
