We hear from Newport that on Wednesday last the 26th ult. at
about 3 o'clock in the evening, a large brigantine,
belonging to Mess. Evan and Francis Malbone, son of said
Evan, bound in from Jamaica, with a number of passengers on
board, took fire between Point Judith and the light house. .
. [36 lines describing how the fire began, efforts to put it
out, and escape/rescue attempts.] It is said that one of the
passengers which perished, was Mrs. Hallam, who with several
others were coming to the continent from Jamaica, to join
their Company of American Comedians: They had with them a
quantity of plate, their scenes cloaths, &c. ----- which
with the value of the vessel and cargo, makes the loss to
amount to about 7000l sterling.
