[Boston] From the Boston Gazette. Yesterday being Lord's
Day, usually called by the better sort of people Sunday, I
took notice with abundance of spiritual consolation, that
the dawn was ushered in with the discharge of cannon from
all his Majesty's ships in this harbour and Fort William.
Lest it should be forgot by any, it may be proper to
observe, that this day is set apart weekly in commemoration
of the resurrection of our blessed Saviour: the thunder of
cannon therefore "early in the morning when it is yet dark"
may be suitable to awaken sleepy Christians to a sense of
duty; and probably the solemn fife and drum may hereafter as
heretofore, be brought in to aid in the religious exercises
of the day. . . [12 more lines suggesting cannon-firing
occur less often, perhaps one a year on Christmas, in order
to save powder and linking such activity to "the long wished
for coalition between the mother country and the colonies."]
[signed] A Tory.
