Mr. Watson, Injured innocence demands a place for the
following in your impartial paper. The principle of self-
preservation seems to pervade the whole system of the
universe, and operates very powerfully through all the
animal creation, and sectors very deeply interwoven with the
very principles of our constitution, by that God by whom we
are so fearfully, wonderfully, and wisely made. . . [14
lines]
Whene'er they call, I'll readily afford,
My tongue, my pen, my counsel or my sword.
. . . [79 lines]
When some true joke, has flung their guilty souls,
In vengeance they determine to be fools.
. . . [50 lines]
Immortal swords admit of no defence;
For want of decency is want of sense.
. . . [signed] Historicus Verus. Middletown, Nov. 3, 1773.
