Bautzen, Octo. 17. The 13th inst. Marshal Daun gave private
orders to the several colonels, and commanders of regiments,
to march immediately after the beating of the retreat,
directing them their respective distances. They marched
accordingly, leaving a man at each tent, with drummers here
and there to beat as usual, in order to persuade the enemy
that the army was quiet in the camp, with orders however to
strike the tents as soon as ever they heard their
cannonading at day break. As a farther precaution to
conceal their march, several small detachments were likewise
ordered into the woods on the side of each wing to hack and
make a noise, which had also a very good effect. After
these dispositions, we attack'd the enemy the 14th at break
of day, forced their entrenchments, and gained complete
victory.
