Puy, in Velai, April 21. On Sunday evening last, between
nine and ten, a tragical event happened in this town.
Between two and three hundred people, of both sexes, curious
to see the tricks of an Italian juggler, who had amused the
people for some days, repaired to a large room which he had
hired to exercise his talent in. After two or three
surprizing tricks, he said, Now you are going to see
something very extraordinary; and scarcely were the words
out of his mouth, when indeed an affair happened which no
less astonished the trickster than the spectators. . . [9
lines describing accidental collapse of the floor] It was
pleasant enough to hear two servants who were peeping
through a window, (on seeing all the people disappear, and
thinking it was one of the juggler's tricks) innocently cry
out, O! what a stroke is there! that indeed surpasses all
the rest!
