New-Haven, September 13. 'Tis reported here than, on Tuesday
evening last appeared at West-Haven, a horrible monster or
male giant, twelve feet high, whose terrible head was
internally illuminated. . . [5 lines describing monster]
The assailants pursued and soon took him captive, and
triumphantly drove him about a mile in the town, attended
with the discordant noise of drums, fiddles, and taunting
huzzas. . . [followed by 7 more lines describing destruction
of monster by mob] It should be mentioned that, through the
whole of this raree-show, no unlawful disorder happened. . .
[4 more lines comparing New Haven mob to Boston mob and
describing label fixed to monster's mouth]
Behold a giant vile and base
(Ye humane powers deplore my case!)
Has got me under; and keeps me so
That I can hardly creep or go.
. . . [12 more lines] [signed] Antonius.
