Extract of a letter from Winchester, Octo 16. About a month
since, a serjeant belonging to the 14th Regiment of Foot,
now lying in this city, was found drunk upon guard; and
being tryed by a court marital, was sentenced to be reduced
to a private man, and to receive 200 lashes, next field day
the prisoner was brought out to receive his whipping, which
was executed with uncommon severity. Amongst other unusual
aggravations of the punishment, the drummers were ordered to
strip, to stay near a minute between every stroke, and
instead of twenty-five, to give only ten lashes apiece. . .
[22 lines reporting subsequent death of prisoner and arrest
of the captain]
