Boston, May 26. Monday last was the time appointed for the
public rejoicing on the repeal of the Stamp-Act--The ardor
of the people was so great, that immediately after the clock
struck one in the morning, the bell on the Rev. Doctor Byles
Church (as being the nearest to Liberty Tree) was set a
ringing; which was soon answered by the bells on Christ-
Church, at the other end of the town; and in a short time
all the other bells of the town struck in. Before two
o'clock musick was heard in the streets, the drums beat, and
guns fired. . . [17 lines describing celebrations] About
twelve at night, upon a signal given in the common, and the
beat of a drum, the populace retired to their respective
dwellings, the lights were put out and the town was hushed
in an unusual silence.
