Philadelphia, April 21. Yesterday arrived Capt. Winter from
Montsserrat, who gives the following particulars, . . . a
Negro called on a white woman, and told her he must have his
jacket she was making, . . . and asked her to let him take
her child, that it was a pity it should be killed, for there
would not be many white men alive on Saturday, as the
Negroes would destroy them all on Friday night, the 18th,
(being Shelah's night, on which there was to be a grand
ball) . . . The woman immediately lodged an information when
the drums beat to arms, and the militia . . . turned out,
and mounted guard. . . [14 lines]
